Playboy has chosen to offer some of their corporate collection to the public for a’biddin’. With bids from $500 to $26,000, the titty cartoon is fetching some big money! I’m no art connoisseur. However, it looks to me like some of those Playboy cartoons wouldn’t have made it out of an undergrad art show if it weren’t for Hef throwin’ the Playboy name behind them.
Who would spend 26 grand on Vargas when there’s superior talent out there to invest in? Who at E! drops money on The Girls Next Door when there’s probably more interesting and hotter old dude/young chick shows being pitched? Lazy people, that’s who. I wanna see a reality show about those Saudi princes who are buying up hot, young white chicks. (here:9:26 and second part here). Fight the mediocrity of Playboy, people. It’s dead conduit for sex, in any manifestation.
I think it is safe to say that there is no real challenge or honor in merely painting a recognizable likeness, the way Vargas did. And if ever there was, it ended with the invention of photoshop.
Instead, The challenge is to see the design in things, to distill the elements of harmony, balance, beauty, contrast, etc. from our experience of nature and apply them in our own creation. An artist should at least be able to come up with an interesting composition (as opposed to the boring vertical stripe down the center of the page that Vargas chose).
